🎨 Meta using AI to Animate
Children have always expressed creativity through drawing. They developed an AI system demo to animate artwork and are now releasing the animation code along with a dataset of 180,000 annotated amateur drawings for further innovation. This dataset, detailed in their research paper, aims to help researchers build tools for analyzing amateur drawings and unlock new storytelling experiences and art accessibility.
In late 2021, they released their Animated Drawings Demo, which allowed users to upload, annotate, and animate their drawings. Over 3.2 million people visited the site, uploading 6.7 million images. Before releasing the Amateur Drawings Dataset, quality and privacy safeguards was ensured.
Expanding on the open-source code and dataset, researchers can enhance methods of analyzing and augmenting amateur drawings. However, training models to understand the wide range of figure drawings is challenging, as annotated drawings are scarce and synthetic drawings don't capture all nuances.
To generate animations from single drawings, the system uses a series of subtasks: human figure detection, segmentation, pose estimation, and animation. By fine-tune repurposed computer vision models using the Amateur Drawings Dataset to better recognize drawings.
The hope is that this dataset and animation code will inspire new creators and aid researchers in developing AI tools that complement human creativity. The dataset, featuring real-world conditions, provides a unique resource for the AI community working with pen-and-paper drawings.
