The Power of AI in Today's Professional Landscape
As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to evolve, tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT, powered by large language models (LLM), have led many to believe that these tools will become indispensable assets for professionals in various fields. Business leaders, real estate agents, and lawyers, among others, are increasingly relying on these AI-driven resources for various purposes. Research already shows that the teaching profession is one of the areas most impacted by AI today.
Language Modeling AI Technologies: A Study on Susceptibility
A recent study examined the influence of language modeling AI technologies, such as ChatGPT, on various professions and industries. The results showed that some professions, such as teachers, are more susceptible to the impact of AI compared to others, like psychologists and counselors. The term "susceptible" encompasses a wide range of potential effects, from job displacement to the integration of AI technology into daily tasks.
Ranking Professions by AI Susceptibility
Telemarketers were ranked as the most susceptible profession for language modeling AI tools, followed by post-secondary English and foreign language teachers. In fact, nine of the 11 most susceptible positions were teachers. The legal services industry was identified as the sector most susceptible to these AI technologies, with other highly susceptible areas including artist and sports management, travel agency services, and grant and gift services.

AI Advancements: Job Growth or Replacement?
The question remains whether this susceptibility will result in job growth or replacement. To investigate this, AI researchers from Princeton, the University of Pennsylvania, and New York University used the AI Occupational Exposure (AIOE) metric to assess the susceptibility of jobs and industries to AI advancements. The researchers specifically focused on language modeling AI capabilities, considering ChatGPT's rapid growth and widespread use.
A Capability-Based Approach to Assessing AI Exposure
Manav Raj, one of the researchers, explained their approach: "We proceeded by breaking down occupations by the portfolio of capabilities they require. Different jobs have different skills that are important. We took a capability-based perspective and measured exposure to advancements in various AI applications at the capability level."
The study considered 10 common AI applications, such as image generation (e.g., the DALL-E app) and language modeling (e.g., ChatGPT), and assessed their relevance for various occupational skills by mapping them to different professions.
